Insect Description
Rhynchophorus ferrugineus are large insects (greater than 25mm long. they are found over a very wide geographical area involving many different climates. The weevils are attracted to dieing or damaged parts of palms, but also attack undamaged palms. The damage is caused by the larvae who bore through the soft tissue such as the tree crown, the upper part of the trunk and at the base of the petioles.
|
|
On average, females lay 260 eggs which take 3 days to hatch. the larval period takes two months, the pupal period, three weeks. These figures can vary considerably across different regions.
The females use the rostrum to bore into the plant tissue to form a whole in which they lat their eggs. This occurs most frequently in crowns which have been damaged.
Pheromones are used extensively for both monitoring the development of infestation and for mass trapping. One Ferrugitom 200 lure is hung inside a bucket trap from the lid. The bucket trap will usually contain in the base a mixture of rotting plant material and an insecticide.
This technique has been proven highly effective yet simple to apply.
Directions for Use
-
It is recommended to use a bucket trap for monitoring and mass trapping the Red Date Palm Weevil using Ferrugitom 200.
-
The trap may be placed in the ground or hanging from a pole (approx. 1 meter height).
-
The outer surface of the trap should be wrapped with a ‘sac cloth' to facilitate the weevil crawling into the trap.
-
At the base of the bucket trap, insecticide treated sugar cane or palm should be placed. This facilitates the elimination of the weevil once inside the trap.
-
The lure should be placed in a small ‘basket' hanging from inside the lid of the bucket trap.
-
Replace the lure every 4 to 6 weeks.
-
Use approximately :
- 1 lure per 15 palms—when palms are scattered
- 1 lure per 50 palms—when palms are planted in rows of 6m
- Approx. area of 50 palms = 250 sqm
